I’m Andy McCann, a filmmaker, writer and videographer based in the South East of England.

I studied Television & Broadcasting (BSc Hons) at the University of Portsmouth, and since then I’ve been doing what I love most, making films.

Like most creatives, my work sits across two worlds.

On the commercial side I am the Director and Head of Videography for the marketing agency Dope Studio.

I’ve worked on projects for McLaren FE, McLaren Shadow Racing, Trend Micro, Tracsis and Udemy. Creating corporate videos, digital marketing campaigns and social content to keep a roof over my head.

But the reason I picked up the camera in the first place is to make narrative films.

I’ve written, self-produced and directed a short film every year since 2015.

I love working as part of a big crew, but for my own projects I’ve built my process around a small crew, and I like being close to every decision that shapes the story.

I lean into dark comedy, usually with moral twists and turns. I’m drawn to characters who feel and sound real. I like comedy because it lets you lower your guard, and I like moral tension because it sticks with you.

My films have had a really strong run on the festival circuit. Two of my shorts were screened at VUE Cinema Piccadilly, which is something I’ll always be grateful for. I’ve also been lucky enough to receive awards presented by people I massively respect, including Ben Wheatley, Tim Pope, Hugh Ross and Jo Brand.

Whatever the project, my approach is the same. I’m big on preparation and I like sets that feel calm and focused. I can be hands-on and light, but I’m also comfortable scaling up when a project needs a crew, extra kit, or a more complex setup.

Right now, I’m looking to make my feature film debut and actively looking for funding to get it made. It’s still very much in the spirit of what I do best, character-led, darkly funny, and with that moral edge that makes the film hit a little harder. I’m speaking with potential partners and keeping conversations open with producers, investors and anyone interested in backing bold independent film. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to give me a shout.
